Grimshaw, John Atkinson Biography
(1836-1893)
John Atkinson Grimshaw was a British painter who worked mainly in the North of England and lived in Yorkshire until his last years, which he spent in London, sharing a studio with the American artist James McNeil Whistler. The son a Leeds policeman Grimshaw worked as railway clerk until the end of the 1850s when marriage and contact with artists led him to commit himself to painting. He is best known for his paintings of townscapes and nocturnal scenes. His success was remarkable and critically acclaimed.
