Rockwell, Norman Biography
(1894-1978)
American painter and illustrator, best known for his magazine covers and
illustrations for such prominent American periodicals as the Saturday Evening
Post, the Ladies' Home Journal, and Look. Norman Rockwell was born in New York
City, and he trained there at the Art Students League. Norman Rockwell was a
careful craftsman with an ability to represent detail realistically. The
subjects of most of his illustrations are taken from everyday family and
small-town life and are often treated with a touch of humor. Though loved by the
public, Rockwell's work was dismissed by most critics as lacking artistic merit
and authentic social observation.
